What is TOEFL?

Administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service), TOEFL measures the ability of non-native English speakers to use and understand English at the university level.

Purpose:

  • Required for admissions in the United States, Canada, and some European and Asian universities.
  • Also accepted for professional certifications.
Format:
  • TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) is most common
  • Sections:
    1. Reading – 35 minutes
    2. Listening – 36 minutes
    3. Speaking – 16 minutes
    4. Writing – 29 minutes
Scoring:
  • Scored out of 120 (each section worth 30 points)
  • Competitive universities require: 85–110
